Gideon Boako, spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has denounced illegal mining activities in Ghana’s water bodies, calling them “inherently evil.” His remarks reflect growing national outrage over the environmental devastation caused by galamsey (illegal mining), which continues to threaten the country’s water resources and public health.
In a recent interview with Peace FM, Dr. Boako highlighted the severe consequences of mining in rivers and lakes, emphasizing how these activities degrade the environment and jeopardize communities that rely on clean water for drinking, agriculture, and daily life. He described the situation as not just an environmental issue but a moral one, stating, “Anything that will destroy human lives is evil and must not be countenanced.”
Boako’s comments come at a time when illegal mining remains a pressing national concern. He reiterated Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s firm stance against both unregulated and licensed mining practices that harm the land and water bodies. “The most painful part is those mining on our water bodies,” Boako said. “The water bodies that we all use for our cooking and drinking purposes are not good at all. It is evil to mine in water bodies.”
