DON’T OFFER SEX AS GIFTS ON VALENTINE’S DAY – Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo Cautions Youth

The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has urged young people across Ghana not to offer sex as a gift on Valentine’s Day but rather celebrate the occasion in a responsible and meaningful way.

In a press release dated February 13, 2026, the Ministry encouraged the youth to mark the day with expressions of love that uplift and empower them, instead of engaging in activities that could endanger their health and future.

“Valentine’s Day should be a celebration of love that builds, not destroys,” the Minister stated. “Let us remember not to offer sex as a gift on this day but offer chocolate to a loved one.”

The Ministry also cautioned against substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs, stressing that such behaviours pose serious risks to the wellbeing of young people.

According to the Minister, the growing cases of teenage pregnancies and rising HIV infections among the youth are alarming and require urgent collective action.

“Drugs and substance abuse not only harm the body and mind but also undermine the aspirations of young people who are destined to be the future leaders of this nation,” he noted.

Mr Opare Addo called on the youth to respect themselves and make choices that secure their future, adding that Valentine’s Day should be observed free from alcohol and other harmful substances.

He further appealed to parents, guardians, educators and community leaders to guide young people towards positive decisions, especially at a time when they are exposed to increasing social pressures.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible living among the youth and building a generation that is disciplined, empowered and ready to lead Ghana into greater heights.
