MINISTRY OF SPORTS CLEARS OUTSTANDING BLACK STARS TECHNICAL TEAM SALARIES
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has resolved a long-standing issue by settling all overdue salaries owed to past and current members of Ghana’s Black Stars technical team, covering payments dating back to 2020.
Led by Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams, the process involved a detailed review and coordination across relevant agencies to ensure full compensation for coaches and support staff from various periods of service.
Former head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor received the largest payout of $120,000 in back pay. His assistant, David Duncan, was paid $40,000. Chris Hughton, dismissed after Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations performance, received $68,904 for salary arrears and sign-on fees. His assistants, George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, were paid $20,833 and $12,500 respectively.
The current technical team under head coach Otto Addo—who resumed duties in March 2024—had not been paid since October 2024. Their salaries through March 2025 were disbursed, with Addo earning over $420,000 for six months. Support staff, including Joseph Laumann, John Paintsil, Fatau Dauda, and Team Coordinator Francis Bugri Tampuli, also received their respective back pay totaling several tens of thousands of dollars.
Despite this significant progress, salaries for April and May 2025 remain unpaid, highlighting ongoing financial commitments. Additionally, Maxwell Konadu, assistant coach under Milovan Rajevac from September 2021 to January 2022, received $30,000 in outstanding pay.
Though the Ghana Football Association contracts coaches, the government traditionally shoulders salary payments. This settlement marks a critical step in rectifying years of wage delays and underscores the government’s dedication to supporting the Black Stars’ technical team.
