The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately remove Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa from his position as Minister for Foreign Affairs, accusing him of incompetence and failure to manage Ghana’s international relations effectively.
He maintained that immediate reform at the Foreign Ministry was necessary for Ghana’s welfare, national interest, and reputation abroad.
Ayeh said the Foreign Minister had put public acclaim ahead of tangible accomplishments and lacked the temperament necessary to handle complicated diplomatic relations.
He claimed that the Minister had proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was no longer qualified for the position.
“The Minority therefore calls on the President to remove Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa from the Foreign Affairs portfolio immediately and appoint a competent diplomat with proven experience, steady judgment and a genuine commitment to Ghana’s long-term interests over personal political theatre,” he stated.
According to Ayeh, the Minority no longer believes that the Foreign Minister can safeguard Ghana’s economic and diplomatic interests, especially in light of recent events involving the United States.
He claims that within seven days, the Minority is also requesting immediate public accountability from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In order to explain all official correspondence between Ghana and the United States during the previous 18 months about migratory cooperation, deportation issues, and visa processing, he said the ministry must arrange a thorough news conference.
Additionally, the minority is requesting that the ministry offer precise justifications for Washington’s inclusion of Ghana on a list of 75 nations subject to visa-related limitations.
Furthermore, according to Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, the ministry must describe any plans it has to guarantee Ghana’s removal from the list.
Stressing that the decision might have major repercussions for millions of Ghanaian families who rely on remittances from outside, he also demanded a thorough accounting of remittance estimates and a thorough economic effect study of the visa freeze.
“We demand immediate public accountability. Within seven days the foreign ministry must hold a comprehensive press conference to address all communications between Ghana and the US regarding migration cooperation, deportation issues and visa processing over the past 18 months.
“2. specific reasons given by the Washington for including Ghana on the 75 country list. 3. The ministry strategy if any exists to ensure Ghana’s removal from that list. 4.Full accounting of remittance projections and economic impact assessment of the visa freeze,” Ayeh stressed.
He also called for a comprehensive accounting of remittance estimates and a comprehensive economic impact study of the visa freeze, emphasising that the move might have significant consequences for millions of Ghanaian households that depend on foreign remittances.
