MP JOHN DUMELO REAFFIRMS RENT REFORMS, BEGINS TALKS WITH HOUSING MINISTRY

Ghanaian actor-turned-politician and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has restated his commitment to addressing Ghana’s rent crisis by pushing for the enforcement of the Rent Control Act.

In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Dumelo assured constituents that work is underway to fulfil his promise to make rent more affordable and accessible for Ghanaians, particularly the youth.

“I remember making this statement and it’s being worked on,” Dumelo wrote, referencing a 2020 tweet in which he vowed to advocate for rent reform if elected to Parliament. “Engagements with the ministry responsible for Housing has commenced and in due time I will update Folks on progress.”

In the original tweet dated August 17, 2020, Dumelo criticised the practice of demanding two years’ rent upfront, calling it unfair and unsustainable in the current economy. “We need to pay at most 6 months rent advance. How can we (youth esp) survive in an economy where we have to pay 2 years rent upfront? Not right. We dey bleed,” he wrote.
