An elderly demonstrator, visibly displeased with the problem of illegal mining, participated in the #SayNoToGalamsey protest to voice her concerns.
As per Naa Densua, she was driven to join the battle as she believes ‘galamsey’ has caused irreparable damage to the environment, leaving nothing for future generations.
She displayed a bottle with contaminated water from the Pra River to the JoyNews team, shouting, “Who will drink?”
She joined the protest at her old age because she believed it was for her grandchildren, not herself.
She added that the threat has persisted for an excessive amount of time and that now was one of the prime moments to stand up to those in power.
The woman, visibly annoyed by the illegal mining, said, “Because my grandchildren will drink this in two years’ time if I don’t help put a stop to galamsey. It has to end. I don’t want my grandchildren to drink this. I want clean water today, not tomorrow.”
“It has gone on for too long. It has to end. Galamsey, no more,” she said.
Reacting to the claim that the government was working around the clock to resolve the issue, she asked, raising her voice, “They’re doing what? We are the ones here; where is the government?
“The government sreehould come and tell us what it’s doing. When we understand and see the action, then we will know what is what. No action, we will not go home. We will be here th days.”
