SOUTH AFRICAN ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTING TO SMUGGLE CANNABIS FROM THAILAND TO GHANA

An intelligence-led operation at Kotoka International Airport led to the seizure of over 30kg of cannabis

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has apprehended a South African national at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for attempting to smuggle more than 30 kilograms of cannabis into Ghana.

The suspect was arrested on Monday, November 10, upon his arrival on a flight from Thailand. According to NACOC, an intelligence-led operation prompted a detailed search of his luggage, leading to the discovery of the illicit substance.

The cannabis was found carefully concealed in vacuum-sealed packages hidden within the suspect’s personal belongings.

In a significant development that points to a broader conspiracy, NACOC also arrested an airline official stationed at KIA. The official is alleged to have assisted the South African national in bypassing standard security protocols.

Preliminary investigations suggest a coordinated effort between the foreign national and the airline staff to transport the large quantity of illegal substance into the country. Both suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.

In a statement, the Commission reiterated its uncompromising stance against drug trafficking, assuring the public that robust measures are in place to detect and deter such offences.

NACOC issued a stern warning, stating that “anyone found complicit in narcotic-related offences regardless of nationality or position, will face the full rigours of the law.” The arrest of the airline official underscores the commission’s commitment to targeting all individuals involved in narcotics networks, including potential insiders who facilitate the crimes.
