Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah declares that free university tuition will commence in 2026, a policy designed to enhance access to higher education for every citizen.
Emerging academics in Namibia’s higher education institutions will benefit from free tuition, following a significant declaration by President Netumbo Nandi–Ndaitwah.
In her inaugural State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, she announced that from 2026 onwards, all public universities and technical colleges in Namibia will provide free tuition for Namibian citizens.
The announcement details the elimination of registration and tuition fees at public higher education institutions.
“As from the academic year 2026, the Government of the Republic of Namibia will introduce free tertiary education at undergraduate level in public universities and technical colleges,” she said.
The policy will be applicable to all Namibian students registered in undergraduate programs at public universities and vocational colleges. Nonetheless, students will continue to be responsible for their accommodation and living costs.
This action comes after years of efforts by student groups and civil society organisations demanding more funding and improved access to education. It also coincides with larger regional conversations regarding the cost-effectiveness of education.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah further highlighted that the policy seeks to enhance access to higher education and promote human capital development within the nation. Additional information regarding funding, implementation methods, and eligibility will be shared by the Ministry of Higher Education at the appropriate time.
