NAPO WINS 50,000ghc DEFAMATION LAWSUIT AGAINST SAMMY GYAMFI

This 13th day of October 2022 ruling was issued by Justice Charles Gyamfi Danquah of the High Court in Accra, General Jurisdiction 12.

The court in the case Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh v. Sammy Gyamfi ruled that Sammy Gyamfi defamed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh when he claimed at a press conference in June 2019 that Seidu Yakubu MBA, a person suspected of involvement in the kidnapping of the two Canadian girls in 2019, is the errand boy of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Damages of 500,000 GHC were consequently granted by the court.

It has also been mandated that Sammy Gyamfi provide an official retraction and apology in writing.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO [Nana Poku], and Seidu Yakubu, also known as “MBA,” one of the accused persons in the kidnapping of the two Canadian women on June 4, 2019 in Kumasi, are said to have had a “connection” and a “relationship,” according to statements made by Sammy Gyamfi at a press conference on Thursday, June 13, 2019.

There’s more to Seidu’s involvement with the NPP than meets the eye. Mr. Gyamfi allegedly said at the press conference, “He is the personal bodyguard of the Asokore Mampong MCE, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, and an errand boy for both the Manhyia MP, Hon. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (aka Wontumi).

Sammy Gyamfi received a letter from the then-Education Minister’s attorneys denying the accusations.

Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), refused to apologize after being asked to by attorneys for Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh.

I will not recant anything I said about Matthew Opoku Prempah nor will I offer an apology to him. Is it still defamatory or malicious if the speaker only says, “It’s been alleged”?

Everything I’ve mentioned is true and accurate, thus I have no need to apologize to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

If someone claims what I said is defamatory and his attorneys advised him to go to court, the plaintiff may do so, and the judge will decide whether or not there was malice in my remark. Neither the statement nor my apology needs to be reconsidered.
