‘NATIONAL CATHEDRAL LAND WAS ACQUIRED BY THE STATE IN 1910’ — Minister of Lands, Samuel Abu Jinapor

According to Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor, the state bought the land on which the National Cathedral is being constructed in 1910.

He claimed that a Certificate of Title proved that the roughly 16.26-acre block of land was purchased by the State on September 29, 1910.

Mr. Abu Jinapor responded to a question on the floor of the Parliament on Tuesday by stating that the property was, therefore, public land and that Article 257 (1) of the Constitution had granted it to the president of the republic in trust for and on behalf of the people.

Mr. Abu Jinapor was invited to react to a query presented by Mr. Kwame Agbodza, a representative from the Adaklu constituency in the House of Representatives.

“Mr. Speaker, according to section three of the Public Lands Ordinance, 1876 (Cap 134), the prevailing statute at the time, the pre-acquisition proprietors were properly compensated.

“The property is thus public land, vested in the president of the Republic on behalf of and in trust for the people of Ghana,” he stated.
