WE NEED $100M TO IMPORT STEEL –National Cathedral Executive Director, Dr. Opoku Mensah Reveals

The National Cathedral of Ghana’s Executive Director, Dr. Paul Opoku Mensah, has defended the costs incurred thus far for the cathedral’s construction.

Many Ghanaians have referred to the cathedral project as the most expensive pit in the world since, despite spending over $30 million on it, no actual building can be seen at the site.

However, Dr. Opoku claimed that some Ghanaians are calling the project the most costly pit in the world because they are unaware of the scope of the effort that has gone into it in an interview with Okay FM on Thursday.

He added that two below floors have already been built, and the insertion of a steel structure is the only significant work still to be done.

He continued by saying that the cathedral’s construction has now come to a standstill because the $100 million needed to fund the steel structure’s construction has not been raised.

“After finishing the foundation, we need money that we will use to import all the steel we need. The steel component of the cathedral will be built before it is brought into the country for us to fix.

“After fixing it, we will be left with the concrete and marble cladding and some few works. So, this is why there is a setback in the construction of the cathedral.

“We need about $100 to import the steel. The cathedral is not a small building. It will be a structure, we have never seen in Ghana before,” he said in Twi.
