NATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS AUTHORITY ORDERS SHUTDOWN OF OVER 60 RADIO STATIONS FOR REGULATORY VIOLATIONS
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered more than 60 FM radio stations across Ghana to cease operations immediately following a comprehensive audit that revealed widespread breaches of broadcasting regulations.
The audit uncovered critical violations including expired operating licenses, unpaid regulatory fees, and failure to adhere to required operational standards. The NCA’s directive emphasizes zero tolerance, warning that any station continuing to broadcast without proper authorization risks permanent revocation of their license.
In a statement, the Authority asserted, “The rules apply to everyone—no exceptions.” The NCA further clarified that affected stations must rectify all outstanding issues before they will be considered for reinstatement.
This decisive action is in line with the directive of the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, who has reinforced the NCA’s mandate to uphold strict enforcement of media and broadcasting laws. The move aims to safeguard the integrity and orderly operation of the media landscape in Ghana.
While acknowledging the essential role that radio plays in the country’s information ecosystem, the NCA maintains that sustainable media development depends on full compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks.
