The National Commission on Culture (NCC) has expressed concern over the increasing popularity of male content creators in Ghana who are wearing clothing traditionally associated with the opposite gender.
As per the body, these actions go against the cultural and moral beliefs of the nation.
The Commission was more worried due to a recent incident at the Ridge Condos All Black Party in Kumasi, where multiple male influencers publicly donned women’s clothing and accessories.
In a graphic.com.gh report, Dr. Richardson Commey Fio, Deputy Executive Director of the NCC, labelled the trend in Kumasi as “disturbing” and “completely unacceptable,” noting the city’s renowned cultural heritage.
Dr. Fio stated that cross-dressing is highly frowned upon in Ghanaian culture and advised against using globalization and modernization as reasons for harming the ethical values of communities.
“It is very disappointing that we continue to experience such behaviours that are an affront to our rich cultural values and norms.
“And for such an event to happen in Kumasi, one of the leading cities in Ghana where culture and traditions are held in high esteem, this is totally unacceptable.
“Certain bad elements in our society who want to denigrate our culture and tear down the good moral fibre of our communities for parochial gains always want to hide behind a misleading narrative of globalisation and modernism,” he said.
He encouraged people to maintain Ghana’s cultural values and norms, instead of supporting behaviors that weaken them.
