The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vehemently rejected the recently announced re-collated parliamentary election results by the Electoral Commission (EC), describing them as fraudulent and a direct affront to Ghana’s democratic principles.
In a press release dated December 21, 2024, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC claimed the results were declared under “questionable and illegal circumstances,” amounting to a betrayal of the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people. The party accused the EC, led by Jean Mensa, of engaging in actions that compromise the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process, further deepening public mistrust in the institution.
“It is abundantly clear that the Electoral Commission… has chosen a path of illegality and impunity,” the statement read, adding that electoral crimes have no expiry date, and accountability will be sought.
The NDC alleged collusion between the EC, the police, and the military to manipulate the results in favor of certain political interests. They also expressed concern over the EC’s disregard for a court order to stay the execution, labeling it a “flagrant violation of the law” and part of a broader scheme to undermine Ghana’s democracy.
The statement further criticized the silence of bodies like the National Peace Council on these developments, describing it as disappointing.
Calling on the international community, the NDC highlighted the potential threat posed by these actions to Ghana’s peace, stability, and democratic progress. They vowed to mobilize supporters to resist any attempt to overturn the will of the people.
“The NDC will not relent in its fight to defend the will of the people and ensure justice prevails,” the statement emphasized, urging the government and EC to refrain from further undermining democracy.
The NDC reiterated its commitment to restoring the dignity of Ghana’s electoral process and ensuring the voices of Ghanaians, as expressed on December 7, are respected.
