NDC RULES OUT THIRD-TERM AGENDA FOR PRESIDENT MAHAMA

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has once again firmly rejected proposals for President John Dramani Mahama to serve a third term, reiterating its dedication to Ghana’s democratic values and constitutional order.

Regardless of the party’s legislative strength, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey said in an interview on Tuesday, December 16, that the party would not support any attempt to modify the Constitution to extend the presidential mandate.

According to Kwetey, Ghana is a prime example of a democratic transition in sub-Saharan Africa, and other democracies in the region are still motivated by the nation’s adherence to constitutional boundaries.

“First and foremost, you must appreciate that all over sub-Saharan Africa, if there is one country that has been able to provide the model that continues to be an inspiration in terms of democratic transition, it is Ghana,” he stated in an interview with Channel One TV.

He emphasised that President Mahama had already made his stance plain by ending talks on a third term, and that the NDC would never support acts that violate the Constitution.

“We at no point should ever encourage a situation where there is a disruption in our constitutional stipulations. The president has spoken about that and clearly he did well because he didn’t want to allow such conversations to continue as if he is entertaining it,” Kwetey said.

The NDC General Secretary added that even though the party presently has a sizable legislative majority, it would not misuse that power to force constitutional amendments for its own political or personal benefit.

“The party itself that has promised to ensure that we do what is right for the country has to ensure that, in this spirit of reset, even though we have such a huge majority in Parliament, we use it only to do what is good for the country and not try to change the Constitution because we are trying to make maybe one person happy,” he explained.

Reiterating the party’s position, Kwetey said, “We stand behind the president and say that there will be no third term.”
