NDC SUPPORTERS PROTEST APPOINTMENT OF ACTING GRA COMMISSIONER-GENERAL

A group of aggrieved youth, allegedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), blocked the entrance to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) headquarters in Accra, protesting Anthony Sarpong’s appointment as acting Commissioner-General.

The demonstration followed President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement on January 21 that Mr. Sarpong had been appointed to lead the nation’s tax collection and revenue mobilisation efforts. A highly respected accountant and auditor, Mr. Sarpong previously held the position of Senior Partner at KPMG, a global auditing and consultancy firm. His appointment is seen as part of the government’s strategy to enhance revenue systems amid mounting economic pressures.

Despite his professional qualifications, some NDC supporters have expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that Mr. Sarpong is affiliated with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). The protesters argue that entrusting such a crucial role to someone they perceive as politically aligned with the opposition could weaken the NDC’s influence within state institutions and undermine the government’s revenue agenda.

The protesters called on President Mahama to revoke the appointment, emphasizing that party loyalty should precede professional merit. As of now, the government has not responded to the demands or addressed the concerns raised by the demonstrators.
