The Ho Central constituency office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region was vandalized on Tuesday evening by irate party supporters protesting the lack of representation from their constituency in President John Dramani Mahama’s government.
The aggrieved youth, some wearing masks, stormed the office, destroying items in frustration. Videos circulating on social media captured the protesters removing office equipment, including computers, furniture, and important documents, and setting them ablaze using car tyres outside the building.
The Ghana National Fire Service officers intervened to extinguish the fire, preventing further damage.
Speaking to TV3 monitored by NKONKONSA.com, Deputy Constituency Secretary Theophilus Adzanko expressed disappointment over the incident, detailing the extent of the destruction. “Two of our computers have been damaged, all our office chairs and tables have been destroyed, and they have been burnt to ashes. The two doors to the office have been broken down. Even membership cards for people who have already received them, and we are yet to distribute, were also damaged,” he stated.
The police, who have visited the scene, announced their intent to launch an investigation into the attack. They plan to work closely with party executives to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violent protest.
The incident highlights growing tensions within the ruling party, as supporters from the Ho Central constituency feel sidelined in government appointments. Party leaders are yet to issue an official statement addressing the concerns of the protesters.
