NETHERLANDS SWEARS IN YOUNGEST AND FIRST OPENLY GAY PRIME MINISTER
Rob Jetten, 38, takes office at head of minority coalition amid divided political landscape

Rob Jetten has been sworn in as the youngest and first openly gay prime minister of the Netherlands, marking a historic moment in the country’s political history.
The 38-year-old leader formally took office on Monday during a ceremony at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, where he was sworn in by King Willem-Alexander.
Jetten secured victory in October’s tightly contested general election, with his centrist Democrats 66 (D66) party narrowly defeating anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders in a closely fought race.
Following the election, Jetten formed a centre-right minority coalition with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA). As a minority government, the coalition does not command an outright majority in parliament, meaning major reforms will require negotiation and support from other parties on a vote-by-vote basis in both parliamentary chambers.
Key proposals outlined in the coalition agreement include an additional €19 billion investment in defence, alongside spending cuts in healthcare and social benefits. The government also plans to tighten asylum policies, including proposals requiring refugees to apply for asylum outside Europe rather than after arrival a particularly sensitive issue that has contributed to the collapse of previous Dutch governments.
Jetten succeeds Dick Schoof, whose administration was one of the shortest-lived in recent Dutch political history.
Under the coalition arrangement, D66 will provide seven ministers, VVD six, and CDA five, with each party also appointing three state secretaries.
Ahead of his swearing-in ceremony, Jetten posted a message on X expressing pride and resolve. “Proud to be doing this together. In a new phase, with great responsibility and, above all, a shared promise to work for everyone in the Netherlands,” he wrote. “By not dwelling on what’s wrong, but by building on what can be improved. That requires courage and collaboration.”
Jetten was first elected to parliament in 2017 and initially gained the nickname “Robot Jetten” for his structured, rehearsed responses to journalists. Over time, he cultivated a more relaxed public image and broadened his appeal, even reaching the final round of a prime-time television quiz show, The Smartest Person.
He previously served as a cabinet minister under former Prime Minister Mark Rutte, now NATO Secretary-General, and was instrumental in advancing a climate package comprising 120 measures aimed at reducing Dutch carbon emissions by 60 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
Jetten is engaged to Nicolás Keenan, an Argentine field hockey star and two-time Olympian.
His appointment is being widely viewed as both a generational shift in Dutch leadership and a milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in European politics.
