The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has seized a staggering 3.3 tonnes of cocaine with an estimated street value of over $350 million in a high-profile interdiction operation.
The bust, carried out on March 4 at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast, uncovered 143 sacks of raw cocaine hidden beneath sand in a tipper truck traveling from Takoradi to Weija. Acting on intelligence, NIB operatives intercepted the vehicle, which had two occupants.
Initial tests by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) confirmed the substance as cocaine, with the first seizure weighing 2,974 kilograms. A follow-up raid on March 8 at a suspect’s residence yielded an additional 345.07 kilograms, bringing the total haul to 3,319.68 kilograms.
Laboratory analyses by NACOC and the Ghana Standards Authority revealed the cocaine had a purity level of 50% to 70%, indicating its high-grade quality. Authorities suspect the drugs were smuggled into Ghana via fishing vessels.
Two suspects, Isaac Quaicoe and Kenneth Cobbinah, have been remanded and will reappear in court on April 2. The NIB has launched a manhunt for other accomplices still at large.
This seizure marks one of the largest cocaine busts in Ghana’s recent history, dealing a significant blow to narcotics trafficking networks operating in the region.
