NO DOOM PROPHECY WILL BE TOLERATED – Police Warns Pastors Ahead of End-of-Year Church Services

The Ghana Police Service has warned the general public, all religious leaders, and especially pastors that making public predictions of doom is still illegal, and that anyone caught doing so during end-of-year church services will be detained and prosecuted as appropriate.

This information was presented in a statement that the law enforcement organization released on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, and shared on its social media channels.

“As the year 2022 draws to a close, we wish to once again entreat the general public, especially faith-based groups to ensure continuous compliance with the law as it relates to the communication of prophecies.

“Let us continue to remember that whereas we have the right to practise our faith in religion, freedom of worship and speech, this right must not be exercised in violation of the rights of others and the public interest.

“As part of sustaining the gains made so far, the Police Service has adopted 27th December of each year as the Prophecy Communication Compliance Day. This day is being set aside to remind all of us, to practice our faith within the confines of the law to ensure a safe, secure environment, free of anxiety generated from predictions of impending harm, danger, or death.

“We wish to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, the statement read in part.

The statement continued by praising religious organizations and authorities for abiding by the law throughout the last year, during which the Police Service stepped up its enforcement.

The service has decided to use December 27 of each year as a reminder to adhere to the law’s prohibition on sending illicit communications, it was stated.

As the worrying trend that had been the order of the day over the years was progressively turning into an annual status quo, where some pastors even accused others of plagiarizing their prophecies, the police service issued a warning last year that it would arrest and prosecute any pastor who engaged in public prophecy of doom.

The police’s attitude has since helped restore some sanity since pastors who engaged in the practice feared the wrath of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the forceful Inspector-General of the Ghana Police Service.
