President John Dramani Mahama has issued a bold directive reaffirming his support for Ghana’s film industry, declaring that only locally produced movies will be aired on the presidential jet.
Speaking at the launch of the Black Star Experience at the Black Stars Square, the president stated emphatically that he would revive the earlier policy from his previous administration that ensured Ghanaian movies were exclusively featured onboard the presidential aircraft.
“I remember when I was president before, I gave a directive that no foreign movies should be shown on the presidential jet—we watched only Ghanaian films. I’m going to give that directive again,” he declared to applause.
According to Mahama, the move is part of a broader effort to promote and uplift Ghana’s creative arts sector under his administration. He revealed that the presidential jet, which is currently undergoing servicing, will be refitted with a library of Ghanaian films once it returns.
“When it comes back from servicing, I’ll tell them to change all the foreign movies and replace them with Ghanaian ones,” he said.
The president also recounted some of his favourite moments watching Ghanaian films, including a memorable Kumawood movie featuring popular actors LilWin and Van Vicker.
“I watched a very interesting one between LilWin and Van Vicker. Armed robbers had attacked Van Vicker, and LilWin and his wife found him. His wife asked where the man came from, and LilWin said he was a white man who had fallen from a plane,” he recalled with laughter. “These are interesting films. We have the talent.”
President Mahama’s remarks come as part of the Black Star Experience launch—an initiative aimed at positioning Ghana as Africa’s top destination for culture and tourism. The year-long celebration of Ghanaian identity will feature street festivals, fashion shows, music competitions, and other activities to promote the creative economy.
With this renewed commitment to homegrown content, Mahama continues to rally behind Ghanaian storytellers, urging the public and private sectors to invest in the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
President John Dramani Mahama has proclaimed his unwavering support for the Ghanaian movie industry.
Speaking at the launch of the “Black Star Experience” at the Black Stars Square on May 1, 2025, President Mahama stated that only Ghanaian movies would be shown in the presidential jet.
He explained that while in office in 2012, Ghanaian movies were only shown in the presidential jet therefore he is bringing the initiative back into action.
“I remember as a young student in Legon, we had our little drama studio, and our students as part of their exams had to do choreography for a drama performance. And we had to pay for their performances. They did very well because of their beautiful African performances… I remember I asked they don’t show foreign films on the presidential jet anymore and that we should watch Ghanaian movies.
“This was when I was president before and I am going to give the directive again. The plan has gone for servicing and when it comes I will tell them to change all foreign movies and put Ghanian ones,” he said.
President Mahama also recounted an interesting Kumawood movie he watched concerning LilWin and Van Vicker during his tenure.
“I watch a very interesting one between LilWin and Van Vicker. When some armed robbers attacked Van Vicker… LilWin and his wife found him lying down. His wife quizzed where he came from and LilWin noted that he was a white man who had fallen from a plan. These are interesting, we have the talent,” he added.
