NO GOVERNMENT FUNDING FOR BLACK STARS’ ASIA TOUR, GFA CONFIRMS

The Ghana Football Association has clarified that the host nations, Japan and South Korea, are fully bankrolling the friendly matches, with players set to receive daily allowances instead of winning bonuses.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially stated that the government is not providing any financial support for the Black Stars’ ongoing two-match tour of Asia.

Ghana’s senior national team is playing international friendlies against Japan on Friday, November 14, and South Korea on Tuesday, November 18, as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum clarified the financial arrangements. “The games will be funded by the two teams that invited the Black Stars; we did not take any money from the ministry,” he stated.

He confirmed that while the Sports Ministry was informed and gave its blessing for the tour, it offered no financial backing. “They gave us their blessing to proceed, but without financial support,” Asante Twum added.

In line with the non-competitive nature of the fixtures, the GFA also confirmed that the players will not be receiving winning bonuses. Instead, the team will be paid daily allowances, or per diems, for the duration of their stay.

“There will be no winning bonuses; only the agreed per diem between the GFA and the players,” Asante Twum explained, noting that this is standard practice for friendly matches, which are viewed as essential for tactical development rather than revenue-generating contests.

The Black Stars, under coach Otto Addo, have begun training in Nagoya, Japan, with a 22-man squad for the tour. The match against Japan will be played at the Toyota Stadium, with kickoff at 10:00 a.m. GMT.
