NO OFFICIAL NOTICE FROM U.S. ON TRAVEL BAN – Foreign Minister, Okudzeto Ablakwa Assures Ghanaians
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed to Ghanaians that the government has not received any official notice from the United States concerning claims that Ghana could be included on a new U.S. travel ban list.
His remarks are in reaction to a declaration by U.S. President Donald Trump on June 14, 2025, suggesting that his administration is contemplating limiting entry to citizens from 36 more nations, including Ghana.
The Washington Post reports that a memo from the U.S. State Department, which the outlet claims to have seen, indicates that this action is being contemplated as a component of a wider immigration enforcement plan.
During his address in Parliament on June 19, Mr. Ablakwa stressed that there is presently “no reason for concern,” as Ghana has not been officially informed by U.S. authorities.
“Ghana has not been officially notified that we are going to be placed on any prohibition list or on any ban where our citizens cannot travel to the U.S.,” he stated.
The Minister also revealed that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has consulted appropriate U.S. officials for clarification.
“I have asked that we be assured that those leaks do not carry merit. So far, I can tell the people of Ghana that there is no cause for alarm,” he assured.
Mr. Ablakwa reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding the rights and movement of Ghanaian citizens while carefully observing the changes related to the announced policy shift.
