Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson, who also runs a school, has voiced her opposition to using physical punishment in schools.
She thinks only parents should have the authority to discipline their children, not teachers or school staff.
During an interview with Joy News, Yvonne talked about how things are done at her school, Yvonne Nelson International School (YNIS). She stated that at YNIS, teachers are forbidden from hitting students.
Instead, they rely on methods like time-outs and counseling to manage disciplinary issues. If a problem persists, the school contacts the parents to involve them in finding a solution.
Yvonne is puzzled as to why some schools feel comfortable resorting to physical punishment when there are alternative ways to guide and correct a child’s behavior.
She emphasized that physical punishment can harm a child, influencing YNIS to adopt a different approach focusing on non-violent discipline.
