NPP PRIMARIES: 8,684 DELEGATES TO VOTE IN UPPER EAST REGION ON SATURDAY
Regional Secretariat assures tight security and smooth conduct across 15 voting centres

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region has completed preparations for its presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, with a total of 8,684 delegates set to cast their votes across 15 voting centres in the region.
Delegates comprise polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, constituency and regional executives, former party officers, former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly (MMDA) officials, party elders, and other qualified members.
Speaking to the media in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Secretary, Elvis Awonekai Figo Atiah, said the regional secretariat was finalising coordination efforts to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible process.
“The NPP regional secretariat is all set for the elections on Saturday. It has been a very rigorous process involving validation and verification at all levels,” Mr Atiah stated.
He explained that the final voter album had undergone multiple stages of validation, involving both regional and national party representatives, as well as agents of the presidential aspirants.
“We validated the album with all constituency executives, presidential candidate representatives, and national officers present. The process was robust, and we are confident that Saturday’s exercise will be smooth,” he added.
Mr Atiah assured delegates of comprehensive security arrangements across all voting centres, particularly in the eastern corridor of the region, including Bawku Central, where tensions have occasionally flared.
“Security will be very tight, especially in the Eastern Zone of the region. The military, police, and other agencies will be fully deployed to ensure peace and order,” he emphasised.
He also disclosed that the Electoral Commission had completed its readiness assessments and would supervise the process as mandated by party and national election regulations.
The Regional Secretary noted that all delegates would be required to present either their party ID cards or a valid national identification document for verification before voting.
“Once your name is in the register, and your ID matches, you’ll be allowed to vote,” he explained.
Accreditation will also be issued to delegates, observers, representatives of the aspirants, media personnel, and election officials. According to Mr Atiah, the accreditation process is being handled directly by the Presidential Elections Committee in Accra, and all passes are expected to be finalised by Thursday.
The NPP’s presidential primaries will take place simultaneously across all 276 constituencies nationwide, as the ruling party seeks to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Mr Atiah expressed optimism that the Upper East Region would deliver a peaceful and well-organised poll reflective of the NPP’s commitment to democratic values.
“We expect a smooth process. Of course, in elections, anything can happen, but we are confident that all necessary measures have been taken,” he concluded.
