NURSES’ STRIKE ENTERS THIRD DAY AMID GOVERNMENT STANDOFF; HEALTH SERVICES AT RISK
GRNMA insists strike will continue until government meets demands despite NLC’s 'illegal' declaration.
Members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) have entered day three of their ongoing nationwide strike, significantly disrupting health services across the country.
The strike, which commenced on June 2, 2025, started with a phased withdrawal of outpatient services and could escalate to a complete suspension of all services if the government fails to address their demands.
The GRNMA initiated this industrial action in response to the government’s alleged delay in implementing a collective agreement signed in May 2024. The agreement, aimed at improving working conditions and settling outstanding allowances, was backed by a court ruling in January 2025, yet remains unenforced.
However, the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Ministry of Health have described the ongoing strike as “illegal,” accusing GRNMA of failing to adhere to due procedures outlined in the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651). According to the government, the nurses failed to provide adequate notice and did not exhaust all negotiation channels before embarking on their industrial action.
Despite these claims, the GRNMA remains adamant. They argue that their actions are justified and necessary to compel the government to honour its obligations to nurses and midwives. To ensure compliance among members, the association has established special task forces and maintains that the strike will persist until the government addresses their grievances comprehensively.
