Ghanaian reggae dancehall artist Stonebwoy has ignited discussions on social media with his assertion that creatives lack the authority to formulate or influence policies in the country.
He emphasized that the power to shape and make decisions about policies that impact society lies solely with those in positions of authority.
While acknowledging the significance and admiration musicians receive, especially from the public, he emphasized the need for realistic expectations regarding their role in the policy-making process.
Stonebwoy’s comments were prompted by a fan’s remark on his Snapchat, which pointed out that celebrities often refrain from engaging in national issues.
This discussion gains particular relevance in light of the ongoing #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest in the country. The protest, organized by the Democracy Hub, a group of young activists, aims to address critical economic challenges and issues related to corruption. Despite facing an injunction from the Ghana Police, the protest took place on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
The police’s handling of the situation, including arrests conducted during the protest, drew strong criticism for impeding the constitutional right to protest and the perceived use of excessive force. Detainees were taken to various police stations in the capital, sparking outrage from fellow protesters and legal representatives working to secure their release.
