Brother Sammy, a Gospel musician, has expressed his deep objection to Ohemaa Mercy’s statement that she was directed by God to end her marriage to Isaac Twum Ampofo after three months of prayer on a mountain amid the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
During an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo show on 11 September 2024, Brother Sammy backed divorce in specific cases but disapproved of Ohemaa Mercy’s method.
Questioning the widespread Christian belief that divorce is always condemned by God, Brother Sammy challenged how one can determine if God is the one who united two people in marriage.
He argued that marriage is a human decision rather than a divine arrangement, saying, “God does not roam to find a woman for a man to marry… You found your partner at the club, party, funeral, etc., and married them.”
He encouraged people in abusive marriages to consider divorce, advising, “If your life is under attack in your marriage, run,” while emphasising that marriage is not eternal. “Marriage is one of the things we’ll leave behind when we die,“ he noted.
Although he had strong opinions on divorce, Brother Sammy vehemently opposed Ohemaa Mercy’s assertion that she was instructed by God to end her marriage.
He argued, “Ohemaa Mercy lied about hearing God’s voice asking her to divorce her husband. It’s never true but lies.”
He went on to theorize that Ohemaa Mercy’s wish for autonomy could have been the main motivation for her choice, implying she desired to experience freedom beyond the bounds of matrimony.
“This is hypocrisy… She has a house and now seeks independence to enjoy life. You see, marriage is a cage,” Brother Sammy said, adding that blaming God for her divorce was unfounded.
Brother Sammy also rejected a suggestion from an audience member to endorse Ohemaa Mercy, noting his disagreement with her methods even though they are both Gospel industry colleagues.
