OMANE BOAMAH, MURTALA MOHAMMED AMONG FATALITIES IN MILITARY HELICOPTER CRASH

Ghana is in mourning following confirmation that Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Murtala Mohammed, are among those who tragically lost their lives in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.
At a press conference in Accra, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah announced the devastating news, naming the high-profile casualties of the crash. The helicopter, an Air Force Z9, was carrying several top government officials and security personnel from Accra to Obuasi when it went off the radar and later crashed at Adansi Akrofum in the Ashanti Region.
Other prominent figures confirmed dead include former Ashanti Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong, Muniru Mohammed (Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator), Samuel Aboagye (former Member of Parliament), and Samuel Sarpong (Vice Chairman of the NDC). The helicopter’s crew, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also perished in the crash.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the helicopter lost contact with aviation authorities during the flight and subsequent search efforts led to the discovery of the wreckage. Eyewitness reports indicate the aircraft was burned beyond recognition, leaving little hope for survivors.
The GAF stated: “The aircraft was from Accra and heading for Obuasi and is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact.” The official confirmation of the fatalities has sent shockwaves through the nation, given the calibre of the individuals on board.
The government is expected to announce further details on funeral arrangements and investigations into the cause of the crash in the coming days. The loss represents a significant blow to Ghana’s political and security leadership.
