OVER 168,000 MARRIED WOMEN IN GHANA ADMIT TO CHEATING ON THEIR SPOUSES – Ghana Statistical Service Report

The age-old stereotype that “women don’t cheat” has been shattered by a recent report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS). According to the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, over 168,000 married women in Ghana have admitted to engaging in extramarital affairs, challenging traditional notions of female fidelity and sparking a national conversation about marriage, trust, and gender roles.

The report reveals that 3.8% of married women in Ghana have had at least one extramarital affair, while less than 1% (0.9%) admitted to having two or more partners. The data also highlights that infidelity is not limited to married women, as 4.0% of divorced, separated, or widowed women reported having two or more sexual partners. Additionally, a staggering 46.6% of women in this category admitted to having sexual relationships with individuals who were neither their husbands nor cohabiting partners.

Age and Infidelity: A Closer Look
The report provides a detailed breakdown of infidelity rates among women across different age groups:

  • Ages 15-24: 3.5% of women in this group reported having two or more sexual partners, while 46.1% admitted to sexual relationships with individuals who were neither their husbands nor live-in partners.
  • Ages 20-24: This group recorded the highest rates of infidelity, with 3.4% having two or more partners and 41.6% engaging in sexual activity outside marriage.
  • Ages 25-29: 3.3% had two or more partners, while 2.1% had sexual relationships with individuals outside their marriage.
  • Ages 30-39: The percentages dropped significantly, with only 1.5% having two or more partners and 14.4% engaging in extramarital affairs.
  • Ages 40-49: Less than 1% (0.8%) of women in this group reported having two or more partners, while 11.4% admitted to extramarital sexual activity.

The GSS report has not only debunked the myth that “women don’t cheat” but has also highlighted the complexities of modern relationships in Ghana. As the nation grapples with these findings, the conversation around marriage, trust, and gender roles is expected to deepen, with calls for greater understanding and support for couples navigating the challenges of fidelity and commitment.
