PARKINSON’S IS NOT A WEAKNESS’ – Anidaso Foundation Condemns Stigma After Franklin Cudjoe Disclosure Of Disease

The Anidaso Parkinson’s Disease Foundation has thrown its support behind policy analyst Franklin Cudjoe following his public disclosure of living with Parkinson’s disease.

Additionally, it has vehemently denounced the stigma and false information associated with the illness.

The Foundation praised Mr. Cudjoe in a statement for his bravery and candor, pointing out that his choice to speak in public contributes to the increasing efforts of Ghanaians and Africans to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease in the country.

The Foundation reported that it has seen conflicting responses to Mr. Cudjoe’s revelation. It stated that while many replies showed compassion, prayers, and support, others revealed serious misconceptions and stigma, highlighting the critical need for public education.

Parkinson’s disease is a complicated neurological disorder that shouldn’t be linked to weakness, lower intelligence, or diminished human dignity, according to the Foundation.

It emphasised that individuals with Parkinson’s disease still lead significant, fruitful, and fulfilling lives.

The Foundation cautioned that stigma, which is frequently the result of ignorance, only serves to increase isolation and jeopardise the health of patients and their families.

It assured Mr Cudjoe and all the people and families in Ghana who have Parkinson’s disease that they are not alone and expressed its strong sympathy with them.

Additionally, it called for answers based on empathy, science, and support and vehemently condemned stigmatising language and attitudes associated with Parkinson’s disease or any other medical condition.

The Foundation encouraged the public to look for accurate information from reliable sources, pointing out that it offers dependable advocacy, support systems, and education to enhance care for those with the illness.

The Foundation explained that “Anidaso” means “hope” and emphasised that a Parkinson’s diagnosis, although life-altering, is not the end of one’s journey. It stated that people can continue to prosper and make significant contributions to society with the right management, community support, and hope.

The Foundation expressed hope that Mr. Cudjoe’s declaration would promote more candid discussions, raise public knowledge, and create a more welcoming atmosphere for Ghanaians with Parkinson’s disease, characterising it as a significant step toward removing barriers.

In order to advance a better knowledge of the problem, it invited the public, media, and other stakeholders to interact with the Foundation.
