POLICE UPDATE ON GALAMSEY FIGHT: 99 EXCAVATORS SEIZED, 208 ARRESTED
The authorities have apprehended 208 individuals linked to illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, during a series of operations in several regions known for galamsey activities that commenced in March this year.
According to a senior police source, the authorities have currently recovered 99 excavators, three bulldozers, four pump-action firearms, three single-barrel guns, and one pistol during the special operations conducted in various Regional Police Commands.
The police special operations primarily operated independently, but at times, some units collaborated with other agencies.
Since March of this year, the special anti-galamsey operations initiated by Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno have seized 11 changfangs— boats equipped with water pumps and milling machines for washing gold ore— along with numerous other items, such as vehicles, motorbikes, tricycles, generators, gold detectors, and pumping machines, which have been turned over to the police.
The source informed the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday that all the accused were undergoing the necessary legal procedures.
