Deputy Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has emphasized that Ghanaians are not opposed to politicians enjoying a luxurious lifestyle, provided that citizens also experience improved living conditions.
Speaking during an interview on TV3, Basintale pointed out the disparity between some political leaders’ extravagant lifestyles and the struggles ordinary citizens face. He criticized the apparent disregard for the plight of the people, highlighting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s frequent use of a private jet despite widespread public outcry over economic hardships.
“Ghanaians are not against politicians living well,” Basintale explained. “What they are against is the fact that they are struggling, while the very people entrusted with managing the country’s resources live like Arabian kings.”
He expressed concerns over the growing frustration among young Ghanaians, many of whom remain unemployed and unable to meet basic needs. Basintale warned that such inequalities create fertile ground for public dissent, particularly when politicians’ visible wealth contrasts sharply with the struggles of the average citizen.
Using the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 elections as a cautionary tale, Basintale urged politicians to prioritize the welfare of their constituents. “If you want, go and buy a jetski. If you want, buy a ship. Ghanaians will say, ‘If you have done for us, do for yourself.’ But if you keep doing for yourself and don’t do for us, we will rise against you,” he stated.
Basintale’s remarks come amid increasing public dissatisfaction with economic challenges and a perceived lack of accountability in governance. He believes the NPP’s defeat serves as a lesson for all political leaders to prioritize the needs of the people they serve.
