The Swiss Guard, who protect the 88-year-old Pope, are practising for his funeral and are under a curfew to prepare for his eventual passing, according to a report by Swiss newspaper Blick.
The Pope has previously mentioned that he has already made arrangements for his burial.
However, both the location of his grave and the design of his coffin will differ from traditional practices.
This development comes after Pope Francis was urgently taken to Rome’s Gemelli hospital last Friday due to severe chest pain.
He had resisted leaving the Vatican for several days despite his condition.
Doctors diagnosed him with a complex respiratory infection, which has prevented him from participating in several scheduled events.
As a result, the Vatican has had to cancel or reschedule his engagements for the week.
On Tuesday, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis has pneumonia in addition to asthmatic bronchitis.
He requires cortisone antibiotic treatment to aid in his recovery.
‘Laboratory tests, chest X-ray, and the Holy Father’s clinical condition continue to present a complex picture,‘ the Vatican said. The infection is of particular concern because the Pope had part of his lung removed many years ago.
Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri, 81, told broadcaster Rai about the Pope’s condition: ‘Francis is very calm. His helm is in the hands of the Lord.’
