PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO CHALLENGES MAHAMA TO CLARIFY HIS POSITION ON GALAMSEY

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has publicly called on former President John Dramani Mahama to take a definitive stance on illegal mining, also known as galamsey, an issue that has gripped the nation in recent years. Speaking at a ‘Thank You Rally’ in Damongo on Monday, the President asked Mahama, the four-time presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to “come clean” about his position on the controversial practice.

Illegal mining has been a hot topic in Ghana, causing extensive damage to the environment, including water pollution and the destruction of arable lands. As both major political parties have presented various policies on combating galamsey, Akufo-Addo’s government has received criticism for its handling of the matter. The President’s comments reflect the ongoing political debate, calling for clarity and transparency from key opposition figures like Mahama.

“We want the four-time NDC presidential candidate to come clean and tell us where he stands on galamsey,” President Akufo-Addo stated, pressing for a clear policy direction from Mahama on an issue that affects many communities across Ghana.

The President’s remarks come at a crucial time as the country prepares for the 2024 general elections. Both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and NDC will be looking to solidify their positions on key national issues, including the fight against illegal mining, which remains a priority for many Ghanaians. Mahama is yet to respond to Akufo-Addo’s challenge, but his stance on galamsey is expected to become a focal point in the upcoming political discourse.
