President Ibrahim Traoré has unveiled a nationwide free housing initiative that seeks to provide shelter for the most vulnerable citizens, including internally displaced persons (IDPs) and low-income earners.
According to humanitarian reports, as of May 2022, over 1.9 million people were internally displaced due to conflict and insecurity. The President’s vision is clear: universal housing access by 2030.
The free housing program officially commenced on July 12, 2024, with the construction of 1,000 social housing units located approximately 40 kilometers from the capital, Ouagadougou. The project will be distributed across key regions:
- 800 units in the Centre-North Region
- 100 units in Ouahigouya (North Region)
- 50 units in Nagréongo (Plateau-Central Region)
- 50 units in Bobo-Dioulasso (Hauts-Bassins Region)
The housing initiative is also designed to stimulate job creation across the construction value chain. Thousands of jobs will be created for local builders, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and laborers. Additionally, local suppliers of materials such as bricks, cement, timber, and paint will benefit from increased demand, fueling economic growth in underserved communities.
Training programs are also underway to equip young people with vocational skills that will outlast the construction phase, creating long-term employment prospects and enhancing local expertise.
In tandem with the free housing project, the government is also rolling out affordable housing programs like the Wassa Program and new developments in Komssilga. These schemes are targeted at citizens aged 18 and above and are designed to offer accessible home ownership opportunities across the country.
These dual-track efforts free and affordable housing demonstrate Burkina Faso’s determination to eradicate homelessness and reduce the country’s growing housing deficit, while empowering citizens economically.
With this initiative, President Traoré is reinforcing his administration’s reputation as one driven by people-first policies. From free maternal care to housing for all, the Burkina Faso leader continues to carve a legacy of equity, empowerment, and forward-thinking governance.
