PUBLIC DEBT: EVERY GHANAIAN OWES GH¢19,000 – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has drawn attention to the significant national debt in Ghana.

He pointed out that if the country’s GH¢577 billion debt were to be divided among all Ghanaians, each person would owe an amount of GH¢19,000.

Mahama highlighted that the high level of debt in the local economy is a hindrance to investment in social and economic development projects.

During a TUC/NDC engagement in Accra, he expressed concern about how Ghanaians could manage this financial burden, particularly in a situation where many young people are unemployed.

He also noted that the debt situation had escalated significantly since 2016, with Ghanaians now owing more than they did during that period.

This underscores his concerns about the growing debt under the governance of the New Patriotic Party.

“Our economy is plagued by high debt levels which hinders investments in social and economic development projects…In 2016, if you shared the public debt of GH¢120 billion among 30 million Ghanaians, each Ghanaian owed GH¢4,000. Today, if you divide the debt of GH¢577billion by 30 million Ghanaians, all of us sitting here owe GH¢19,000 coupled with a relatively higher unemployment rate, particularly amongst the youth exacerbate the challenges faced by our citizens,” John Dramani Mahama stated.
