REMOVE ALL CHINESE SIGNAGE IN GHANA – Former GTDC Deputy CEO Blakofe Demands

Former Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), Akua Djanie Blakofe, has called for the immediate removal of all signposts bearing Chinese inscriptions across Ghana.

She argues that as a sovereign West African nation, Ghana should project its cultural identity through language, and the presence of Chinese-language signs contradicts this principle.

Blakofe acknowledged English as Ghana’s official language and insisted that until local languages such as Twi, Ewe, Ga, or Dagbani are officially adopted as national languages, English should remain the default language for all public signage and communication.

“Whoever is responsible for signposts, why are there signs in Chinese in Ghana? This is not our culture. Let’s take them down. Signs should be in English because, unfortunately, English is our official language. Until we recognize Twi, Ewe, Ga, or Dagbani as national languages, everything should remain in English,” she stated.

Speaking to GhanaWeb TV during the Taste68@68 celebration on March 14, 2025, Blakofe emphasized that retaining Chinese signage undermines Ghana’s cultural independence.

“I want to see every Chinese-language sign in Ghana removed. This is not China; this is a West African country. We must define our identity and not allow others to do so for us,” she asserted.

Her comments contribute to the ongoing debate on national identity, cultural sovereignty, and the influence of foreign presence in Ghana’s public spaces.
