President John Mahama has appointed Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, a renowned sports journalist, as the new Director General of Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA). This marks the first time a journalist with extensive experience in sports development has been appointed to lead the NSA.
Yaw Ampofo Ankrah is globally recognized for his contributions to sports, particularly for elevating beach soccer in Ghana to the international stage. His appointment comes at a time when the NSA has faced criticism for its inability to maintain national stadium standards and effectively manage sports infrastructure.
Ankrah will work closely with the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, to coordinate and develop sporting events in Ghana. His focus will be on enhancing national sports management systems, fostering national unity through sports, and promoting professionalism in the sector.
The appointment follows a period of scrutiny for the NSA, with stakeholders calling for reforms to address long-standing challenges in Ghana’s sports infrastructure.
