RICHIE MENSAH REVEALS BACKLASH OVER CHOOSING MUSIC OVER MEDICINE

Chief Executive Officer of Lynx Group Limited and celebrated music producer, Richie Mensah, has opened up about the intense criticism he and his mother endured when he decided to pursue a career in music at just 17 years old — a choice many considered a waste of his academic potential.

Speaking on Changes with Roselyn Felli on Joy Prime, Richie recounted the challenges he faced after opting out of the conventional path of studying medicine despite excelling academically.

“When I started my journey, I was 17 and a lot of people said I was too young,” Richie recalled. “I finished senior high and had a conversation with my mum, telling her I wanted to do music. It was a big shocker because everybody expected me to go to medical school.”

Richie also revealed that his mother bore the brunt of public ridicule for supporting his decision. “So many people insulted her and said she was allowing her son to waste his intelligence and future. They asked why I was doing music instead of going to study medicine.”

Despite the negativity, Richie stayed resolute. His breakout single Yaro was a defiant message to his doubters. “When I released my first song, many people didn’t believe I would make it. But eventually, I did. So ‘Yaro’ in Hausa means ‘small boy.’ I was saying, ‘They say I be Yaro, but they can’t contest the Yaro.’”

Richie Mensah’s story underscores the importance of following one’s passion despite societal expectations, and serves as an inspiration for young creatives facing similar resistance.
