RIO FERDINAND CRITICIZES THOMAS PARTEY FOR DEFENSIVE LAPSE IN NORTH LONDON DERBY

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has called out Thomas Partey for his defensive error leading to Tottenham Hotspur’s opening goal during the North London derby on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Analyzing the play, Ferdinand criticized Partey for failing to stop a quick counterattack initiated by Pape Sarr. “Partey didn’t want any part of that running against Sarr there. Your holding midfielder has to get across and slow that down,” Ferdinand remarked, as reported by Football Insider.

Alistair Murdoch McCoist, Ferdinand’s co-pundit, echoed his sentiment, emphasizing that Partey should have done more to close the gap in Arsenal’s defense. “That’s not good. He should be breaking his neck to cover that gap between the left-back and the left centre-back,” McCoist added.

The defensive mistake led to Heung-Min Son scoring the opener for Tottenham. However, Arsenal managed to equalize through an own goal before Partey redeemed himself with a crucial tackle that ultimately set up Arsenal’s match-winning goal.

The derby win keeps Arsenal in strong contention, but Ferdinand’s critique highlights areas the Gunners must address as they push for Premier League glory.
