ROADS MINISTER-DESIGNATE QUESTIONS CONTRACT PRACTICES IN SECTOR

The Minister-designate for Roads and Highways has raised concerns about how contracts are awarded in Ghana’s road sector, suggesting that a comprehensive review is necessary if he is approved to lead the Ministry.

Speaking during his vetting, he emphasized the need for collaboration with stakeholders to address systemic inefficiencies in contract management. “We need to sit up and engage stakeholders, contractors, and awarding agencies on these issues. The way we award contracts is problematic,” he stated.

He highlighted that a significant portion of the country’s road sector debt stems from high-interest payments on contracts, underscoring the urgency of addressing these financial burdens.

The minister-designate revealed plans to collaborate with the Finance Minister to tackle the challenges of excessive contractual obligations. “As of today, the NPP is leaving a minimum road sector debt of 100 billion Ghana cedis in commitments,” he noted. “Whatever solutions we propose, we still owe, and we have to pay. That is why I intend to meet with the Finance Minister to find ways to eliminate this waste of resources.”

If approved, he pledged to introduce reforms that will mitigate the accumulation of debts and ensure more efficient use of public funds in the road sector.
