SALARIES OF 2,000 PUBLIC WORKERS TO BE RESTORED AFTER VERIFICATION — CAGD

Controller assures affected staff of reinstatement following audit clearance

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has assured over 2,000 public sector workers whose salaries were temporarily suspended that their pay will be restored once they complete the necessary verification and clearance process with the Ghana Audit Service.

According to the Department, the suspension of salaries followed recommendations from the Auditor-General after a nationwide headcount exercise, and was carried out in accordance with Public Financial Management (PFM) laws.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, February 2, 2026, the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, explained that the temporary suspension was part of efforts to maintain payroll integrity, prevent ghost names, and ensure that only duly verified employees receive government salaries.

“The Auditor-General conducted a headcount exercise last year and, just last month, wrote to us indicating that about 6,000 officers had not participated in the exercise and therefore should not be paid,” he said.

“However, after our internal analysis, we realised that only about 2,000 officers were affected, as issues relating to the others had already been resolved.”

He added that affected employees have been informed through their institutions to present themselves to the Ghana Audit Service for verification.

“Once the Auditor-General completes the process and formally notifies us, we will reactivate their payments,” Mr. Agyei assured.

The CAGD reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and timely salary payments, stressing that periodic audits are critical to cleaning up the public payroll and preventing financial irregularities.

The department urged all affected workers to cooperate fully with the ongoing verification exercise to ensure the swift restoration of their salaries.
