Former Black Stars defender Samuel Inkoom has been granted bail of GH¢100,000 with two sureties in a visa fraud case. The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Susana Eduful, stipulated that each surety must earn a minimum monthly income of GH¢5,000. Inkoom was also ordered to deposit a passport-sized photograph with the court registry.
Inkoom is accused of defrauding Elizabeth Atarime Mboh Awuni of $4,000 to secure a U.S. visa for her client. He has denied the allegations and is set to reappear in court on January 22, 2025.
Background
The case, presented by Police Chief Inspector Tetteh Boafo, involves two complainants: entrepreneur Madam Awuni and public servant Madam Abigail Owusu, both residents of Oyarifa, Accra. Inkoom, who resides in Sekondi Takoradi, allegedly presented himself as someone capable of facilitating visas for the United States and Canada within six weeks for a fee.
In December 2023, Madam Awuni met Inkoom at Achimota, where he claimed to work in the travel and tour industry. Convinced, she paid $4,000 for a U.S. visa for her client. Similarly, Madam Owusu, after a separate meeting with Inkoom, paid $2,000 for the same service.
Allegations
The complainants allege that Inkoom failed to deliver the visas within the promised timeframe and subsequently went into hiding. Upon reporting the matter to the police, Inkoom admitted to receiving the money but claimed he had sent it to a U.S.-based partner to process the visas.
However, investigations revealed that Inkoom had no such partner, and his claims were deemed false.
Recovery and Court Proceedings
Police retrieved $2,000 from Inkoom and returned it to Madam Awuni. Following investigations, Inkoom was charged and arraigned. The case has been adjourned, and further hearings will continue in January 2025.
