SEIZED GOODS IN ONGOING DECONGESTION WILL BE DONATED TO GHANA PRISONS – Accra Mayor
Michael Allotey, the Mayor of Accra, has announced that goods confiscated during the current decongestion efforts will be given to the Ghana Prisons Service.
He stated that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) had formerly auctioned confiscated goods but announced that this practice would be stopped.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) initiated its significant decongestion operation on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The task forces from the AMA, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, conducted operations to take down temporary stalls and unauthorized kiosks, and to clear vendors from sidewalks and roadways throughout significant areas of the Central Business District.
As per the AMA, the initial stage of the exercise concentrates on the AMA Head Office, Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square extending to Adabraka.
They disclosed that the operation, lasting for 2 weeks, aims to enforce city regulations, alleviate congestion, and guarantee the safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles.
After the decongestion activity, vehicles were observed moving freely since traders were removed from the roads and sidewalks.
Michael Kpakpo Allotey, in a press conference on Tuesday, May 20, stated, “This exercise is not a nine-day wonder; we are on the street till we make sure that the roads are clear. We are not done.
For the next hour, we are going back to the street. From here we are going to Circle, and if there is more strength, we will go to Kaneshie. Then we continue tomorrow,” the Mayor stated.
He further revealed in a subsequent interview that “With those who do not have space in the market, under the 24-hour economy plan, there is going to be a day that the street will be blocked for the market women to sell on the street and take our ticket while we divert the drivers to a different road. So there will be days that they will be allowed to sell on the street.
