ARTS AND TOURISM ENCOUNTER: Shatta Wale Boldly Request Dr. Bawumia Responds In Pidgin

Ghana’s dancehall sensation Shatta Wale has sparked major conversations after making a passionate plea during the much-anticipated “Evening Encounter with the Arts and Tourism Fraternity” held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on October 16.

The iconic star didn’t just attend the event—he brought the voice of the streets to the forefront, delivering a powerful message to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

As the Q&A session kicked off, Shatta Wale stood up to ask a question that represented the pulse of the streets. “I’m glad to be here, Your Excellency. Initially, I didn’t want to come, but I feel we have a big problem we can work out together,” he began, before delving into the heart of his concerns.

The dancehall king highlighted the struggles of the underrepresented youth in Ghana, particularly those on the streets who may never make it into boardrooms or benefit directly from governmental job creation schemes. “I’ve been on the street as a ghetto boy,” he said, expressing how far he had come but acknowledging that many of his fans—those who truly built his career—still face hardships. Shatta Wale voiced the pain of watching boys at traffic lights, those who haven’t had the privilege of formal education, left out of job opportunities despite the government’s initiatives in sectors like mining and agriculture.

In a candid plea, Shatta Wale asked Dr. Bawumia to directly address the fans who stand behind Ghana’s creative industry, stating, “I want to know what you have for our fans out there—those on the streets. Your Excellency, when you respond today, please, say it in pidgin small for me.” The request drew laughter and applause from the room, but the message was clear—Shatta Wale wanted the government to connect in a language that the everyday Ghanaian could understand, especially those who feel left behind.

This bold appeal from the dancehall king underscores a larger call for inclusivity, ensuring that governmental policies and solutions reach the most marginalized. Shatta Wale asked Dr. Bawumia to talk to the street boys in a way that they understood. This showed how important it is to communicate with everyone in society.

The encounter, which was organized to foster stronger ties between the arts, tourism, and government sectors, saw a number of other high-profile personalities in attendance, including Samini, Kuami Eugene, Prince David Osei, and Van Vicker. The latter echoed similar concerns about the need for support for the fans who elevate them.

Dr. Bawumia’s team arranged the event to engage with the creative arts sector, discussing policies and challenges facing the industry. Shatta Wale’s question, however, put a spotlight on the grassroots—the very people who form the backbone of the creative economy and who, despite their challenges, continue to support Ghana’s biggest stars.

As the Vice President prepares to respond, fans across the nation are eagerly waiting to hear his answer, especially after Shatta Wale’s heartfelt request for pidgin—a language that speaks to the heart of Ghana’s streets.
