SINGAPORE TOPS USA AS WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL PASSPORT IN 2026 RANKING
Asian nations dominate the top spots in the latest Henley Passport Index, while the U.S. continues a two-decade decline.

Singapore has retained its position as the world’s most powerful passport, according to the latest 2026 Henley Passport Index. Singaporeans can now travel visa-free to 192 destinations.
Asian Dominance at the Top
The index shows a clear Asian dominance in passport strength. Japan and South Korea share second place, offering their citizens visa-free access to 188 countries. The top positions contrast sharply with the United States, which sits in 10th place with access to 179 destinations, having lost visa-free entry to seven countries in the past year.
European Stronghold in the Rankings
European nations continue to hold significant strength. Five countries—Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland—are tied for third place with access to 186 destinations. A larger bloc of ten European nations, including France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, share fourth place.
Notable Climbers and Decliners
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is highlighted as the most improved passport over the 20-year history of the index, now ranked fifth with access to 184 destinations. Conversely, the United Kingdom and the United States have experienced the steepest annual declines in access.
The Bottom of the Index
At the other end of the ranking, Afghanistan remains the world’s least powerful passport, with visa-free access to only 24 destinations. Syria and Iraq are just above it, reflecting a significant global mobility gap.
Expert Analysis on “Passport Power”
Experts cited in the report link passport strength to geopolitical influence. “Passport power ultimately reflects political stability, diplomatic credibility, and the ability to shape international rules,” said Misha Glenny, a journalist and rector at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. The report frames the decline of the U.S. and UK as a signal of a deeper geopolitical shift.
