Ghanaian musician Sister Derby, celebrated for her unique artistry and bold personality, recently shared a touching story about her educational journey and the sacrifices her family made to support her.
In an interview on GTV, Sister Derby reflected on her pursuit of a Master’s degree, a path her uncle strongly encouraged her to take. “My uncle motivated me to continue my education after my Bachelor’s. He said, ‘You’re still in the learning mode, so don’t let time pass. Just continue,’” she recounted.
While his advice inspired her to pursue higher education, the financial challenges were immense. Sister Derby revealed that her mother had to take out a substantial loan of £11,000 to cover her tuition fees. “It was a difficult decision for my mom, but she did it for me,” she shared with emotion.
The musician also highlighted a misunderstanding that added to their financial strain. “We assumed that having a European passport would qualify me for subsidized fees, but I didn’t meet the residency requirement of living in Europe or the UK for three to five years. So, I had to pay international fees,” she explained.
Despite these hurdles, Sister Derby expressed gratitude for her family’s unwavering support and sacrifice. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of family and resilience in overcoming life’s challenges.
Sister Derby’s openness about her experiences has resonated with many, inspiring conversations about the sacrifices families make for education and the determination required to achieve one’s goals.
