A premature surge of applicants breached security at the El-Wak Sports Stadium

A tragic stampede at the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, November 12, has resulted in the deaths of at least six people, with several others sustaining injuries.
The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m., shortly before the official commencement of the 2025/2026 recruitment screening. According to a press release signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, the Acting Director General of Public Relations for the GAF, preliminary investigations indicate that the stampede was triggered by “an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates.”
The sudden and chaotic rush led to multiple casualties. The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the six deceased were “potential recruits.” Those injured in the incident are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
The GAF, in its statement, extended its “deepest condolences to the families of the deceased” and wished a “swift recovery to those injured.” It also assured the public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilize the affected individuals and that arrangements are being made to notify the families of the deceased.
This tragic event highlights the intense pressure and desperation for employment opportunities among Ghana’s youth, leading to a devastating outcome at what was meant to be a day of opportunity.
