SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCER AMA GOVENOR ARRESTED AMID OF #STOPGALAMSEYNOW PROTEST

Social media influencer and lawyer, Ama Governor, made a bold statement as she was escorted into court following her arrest during the ongoing #StopGalamseyNow protest. The protest, aimed at drawing attention to the illegal mining activities (galamsey) destroying Ghana’s environment, saw several demonstrators detained by the police for allegedly violating public order laws.

The 26-year-old lawyer, known for her outspoken views on social justice issues, caught the attention of onlookers as she shouted the famous words, “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery!” while being led into the courtroom. This statement, referencing a line from Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” underscores her call for Ghanaians to break free from systemic corruption and environmental exploitation.

The #StopGalamseyNow protest has gained significant online and offline traction, as citizens and environmental activists rally to pressure the government to take more decisive action against illegal mining operations that are causing widespread deforestation, water pollution, and land degradation. Ama Governor’s arrest has sparked further debate on the government’s approach to managing dissent and public protest.

Supporters of Ama Governor have taken to social media to show solidarity, with many calling for her immediate release and a renewed commitment from authorities to tackle galamsey head-on. The hashtag #FreeTheCitizens is already trending, as citizens emphasize the importance of protecting free speech and peaceful protest in the fight for a better Ghana.

The protest group, comprised of activists, students, and concerned citizens, is demanding stronger enforcement of anti-galamsey laws and greater accountability from officials accused of enabling the illegal mining activities.

In May this year, Ama was given another opportunity to be called to the bar after being denied last year.
